Who are you inspired by? What makes your heart beat faster and causes you to light a fire under your ass? For me, it is Peaches and that is not the juicy fruit. Peaches is an iconic rock star, and she is also my friend. We met back in seventh grade in Toronto and have kept in touch off and on ever since. I have followed her journey as she ignites her passion with her purpose and lives the life she has dreamed. Peaches, known as Merrill back in the day, have inspired me to be silly, laugh, and have fun. From dancing on her garage roof in garbage bags, musical comedy as Danny and Sandy in Grease, to dancing on stage in one of her shows wearing a long blonde wig, black booty shorts, and black bra, she continues to empower and amuse me. Listen to this podcast to learn from the ultimate teacher Peaches as she takes us through her journey from her past as my friend back in junior high where penny loafers and wispy bangs were "the thing" to today where extravagant costumes, engaging energetic shows where "fuck the pain away" is her motto.
Have you always wanted to start a business and don't know where to start? Every woman founder encounters this challenge, with their second thoughts usually fueled by insecurity and the fear of not hitting the mark. Entrepreneur Randi Shinder proved that anything is possible in the market space, as long as you know how to believe in yourself and take even the biggest risks. Joining Karen Pulver and Goddesses, she shares her journey on becoming a beauty authority, partnering with the most prominent people and businesses through the highly-lauded CLEAN Perfume, Dessert Beauty, and Fusion Beauty. Randi talks about her secrets for forging the right business deals, the intricate process of making fragrances, some amazing life-changing beauty hacks, and how she managed to overcome the many roadblocks of her ever-growing career.
Forgiveness is a process of letting go. Sandra Rodriguez Bicknell, the author of Cuts of a Diamond, has lived a life of love, pain, and forgiveness. Join Karen Pulver as she sits in discussion with The Goddess of Sparkle, who teaches us about forgiveness, sharing your memoir coming from a place of helping others, and having clarity of your life and your purpose. Sandra’s story teaches us an important thing. We come to this world raw and life cuts different sides of our journey. The experiences we have to alter the cuts whether they become sharper or under pressure or smoother. Just like a diamond, the stone can have many cuts, and our life, can create many cuts. Who we become through our journey, and when you can stand up for yourself, you can shine, just like a beautifully polished stone. Listen in and learn how you can forgive as well even through intense pain and fear and become the shiniest cut of the diamond you are meant to be.
What kind of human being do you want to be walking on this Earth? What is your moral compass and what are your humanitarian objectives in life? What have you been taught by your parents or have you learned along your life journey? Listen on this podcast to Film writer, and director Beth Lane as we open up the conversation about her upcoming Documentary “Would You Hide Me?” The story of Beth’s journey to discover and unpack the bravery and courage of Arther and Paula Schmitt, a couple who hid Beth’s mother and siblings during World War Two. The Documentary scheduled to be released in May 2022 tells the story through the lens of the Schmitt family who had the courage to hide Beth’s mother and siblings as well as another mother and daughter for two years at their farm at risk of being murdered themselves if found out. Our conversation with Beth will hopefully open your eyes to the examination for yourself of the question “would you hide me?” In times like these where revisionist history is occurring and many Holocaust survivors' stories are being put in the camp of archaic history. Beth brings to light how we can have these conversations of “what would you do” in a non-confrontational way and we can stay present and learn what made us act and believe the way we do. What were we taught and what do we teach our children.
Bongai Mhloyi is a superwoman! Faced with her own personal experience in her family, Bongai has seen firsthand the result of child marriages. She left Zimbabwe to study in the US, but soon became a social worker who’s on a mission to empower young girls to live the life of their dreams. Bongai realized that by raising funds for girls’ education, they could escape child marriages and learn skills to lead productive lives. This advocacy led her to create the nonprofit organization, American-African Youth Leadership Foundation (AAYLF) in 2010. In this episode, Bongai is joined by Moreen, a 30-year-old woman from Zimbabwe who has been positively impacted by AAYLF and now leads a productive life as a mother and entrepreneur. Join in as Karen Pulver and Goddesses get Bongai to share her stories of courage, determination, and empowerment in order to make a difference!

ICONS AND MUSES
Alphonse Mucha, a Czech-born artist, most known as the artist that transformed Paris into his public art exhibit, by creating beautiful posters that made art accessible to the general public. Alphonse created illustrations for theater posters, fragrances, and even rolled cigarette advertisements. Showcasing women as his main subjects usually centered on goddesses or icons.
"Representations of women are at the heart of Mucha's style. For him, the
beauty and elegance of the female form embodied and most directly
communicated his artistic philosophy. In the development of his artistic style,
it was Parisian superstar actress, producer, and director Sarah Bernhardt
who inspired him the most. Bernhardt's fame and influence transcended the
discrimination she faced as a Jewish woman, and she became an icon of the
modern woman, both in her acting roles and as portrayed by Mucha. He met
Bernhardt toward the end of 1894 through the commission of a poster for
her production of the play Gismonda. Despite Mucha's inexperience with
producing posters, Bernhardt was struck by the novelty of Mucha's design,
which featured her life-size figure in an unusually tall format with elegantly
flowing outlines and delicate pastel colors."
NCMA, North Carolina Museum of Art, is the first American exhibit in almost 20 years
and is paired with local artists, Lakeisha Reid, Alisha Locklear Monroe, and Tori "FNord" Carpenter.
They each made their portraits in "Mucha" style and you have to see them in person to get the full beauty of each piece. In the museum's gift shop they have on display and for purchase pieces by local artists: Georgia Hartley, Sharon Hardin, Monica Linares, USU local soy candles, and Brasstown chocolates, all of which have a "Mucha" inspiration included. Check out my Instagram for more photos and videos from Media day.
"In designing these posters, Much established a consistent style, featuring
iconic female figures carrying alluring messages, combined with a variety of
decorative, symbolic motifs. Recognizable, engaging, and relatable, Mucha's
posters were popularly described as "le style Mucha" (the Mucha style),
and these characteristic elements of his work became key features of the
emerging art nouveau style."

Durham, North Carolina – Ella West Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition Stephen Hayes: Reclaiming the Discarded. Notions of cultural capital are reoriented through a modern lens in Hayes’ larger-than-life interrogations of the gaudy, shimmering, and resplendent, through
a wide range of media including bullet shell casings, raw cotton buds, stone, twine, and bronze. His rumination on capitalism and consumerism is contained within the reflective surfaces that bring these works to life across sculptures, wall reliefs, and textiles.
Stephen Hayes: Reclaiming the Discarded is on view through April 6,
2024. For more information about Ella West Gallery, the exhibition, or to
inquire about available work for
purchase, visit:
www.ellawestgallery.com or call (919) 485-9602.
In another corner of the exhibition, a collection of bronze muses stands as envoys of collective memory, powerful missives from a troubled past. While Hayes’ subjects are cast from those who walk among us today, the symbols he uses to adorn them transport the audience into a historical setting from which Black women’s trials and triumphs can be reimagined and re-experienced. The gallery is located at 104 W.Parrish Street in Durham and is open to the public Wednesday through
Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm, with private appointments available upon request.
